Jiraiya "Tenmusu 5-pack

Jiraiya has its main store in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. It sells Nagoya's specialty tenmusu and bento boxes. I actually purchased and tried their standard item, "Tenmusu 5-pack". The price is 650 yen (tax included).

Tenmusu" is an onigiri with shrimp tempura as the filling. It is famous as one of Nagoya dishes, but it is also a specialty of Tsu, which originated in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture.

Each onigiri is slightly smaller than the average onigiri. Jiraiya's "tenmusu" consists of five pieces per person, which is about the same amount as a serving of rice. They are wrapped in natural bamboo bark, giving them a slightly retro appearance. The bamboo skin is not only tasteful, but also has an excellent property of absorbing excess water from the onigiri and keeping the onigiri moderately moist (*Packaging may differ at some stores).

Jiraiya's tenmusu has a rich shrimp tempura with just the right amount of oiliness. The batter is moist because the one I purchased was a pre-made one that was sold in the basement of a department store. It is easy to eat in one bite, and is recommended for children.

Accompanying the dish is kyarabuki, which is made by boiling down the stems of "fuki" (Japanese sweet bean curd) with soy sauce and sake. It is often served as an accompaniment to tenmusu. This dish exudes the flavor of soy sauce and saltiness. You can enjoy the crunchy texture.

Other items available include "Kuromai Tenmusu (680 yen)" made with black rice, "Takana Tenmusu (680 yen)" with takana mixed in, and tenmusu bento boxes with side dishes. We recommend that you compare them with the standard "tenmusu.
