Tanaka Confectionery, Taro, Iwate Prefecture "Taro Karintou" (Ear Karintou)
One of the most famous confections in Taro, Iwate Prefecture, is the "Taro Karintou" of Tanaka Confectionery, popularly known as "Mimi Karintou. These karinto are made with domestic rice germ oil and salt from the Miyako region of Sanriku, and have been loved for their unchanged taste since their establishment in 1923.The dark colored part is made of brown sugar. Since each piece is made by hand, each shape and pattern is different.
The Taro Karintou are several times larger than my ears, but they are only about 3 to 4 millimeters thick and light in the hand!
When you bite into it, the texture is crispy and light. The more you bite into it, the more the aroma and rich sweetness of the dough seeps out. It's simple, but so delicious! Even though I am not from Iwate, it made me feel nostalgic. It's not soggy, so you can eat as many as you want!
I bought it at Iwate's antenna store "Iwate Galaxy Plaza" in Ginza, Tokyo. The price is 432 yen (tax included). If you are nostalgic for the taste, or if you have never had it but are curious about it, please visit the shop.
