Famous Nagasaki Confectionery "Kasudose

Kasdose" is a famous confectionary that has been loved in Nagasaki Prefecture for more than 400 years. It is a Nanban confectionery introduced from Portugal in the Edo period (1603-1868). It is made by baking sponge cake with plenty of eggs, dipping it in egg yolk, and deep frying it in molasses.

It is said to be "extremely sweet," but how sweet is it? We tried it!

How sweet is it really?

Long-established "Hiradotsutaya" Kasudose in Nagasaki

The original cusdose is said to be "Hirado Tsutaya", a long-established shop founded in 1502. Outside of Nagasaki, they are sold in online stores and at the Nagasaki-kan in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

They are small enough to eat in one bite, and each pack contains two pieces. They are a bright golden yellow color, like the yolk of a nutritious egg. The surface is covered with an even layer of granulated sugar.

The rough texture reflects the sparkling light and is beautiful.

I tried the cascados.

When you eat it, you first feel the rough texture of the zari-zari. Next, you can feel the soft and airy texture of the sponge cake dough in your mouth. When you bite into it, only the surface layer is juicy and the inside is fluffy, a nice contrast in texture.

As you chew, the richness of the egg and the sweetness of the sugar spread from the middle to the aftertaste. Eventually, it is sweet all the way through to the aftertaste! Very sweet! But this full-bodied sweetness is kind of addictive...!

Kasdose, sweet, but good!

Indeed, as has been said, the cascadose was sweet. But it was not the kind of sweet that makes you say, "I don't want it anymore," but rather an addictive taste that makes you want to eat it again. It is very good.

This "Kasdose" used to be made with eggs and sugar, which were luxuries in the old days, so it was a "fantastic confectionary" that only the lords could eat. If you eat it while thinking back to those days, you will appreciate the sweetness.

In addition, the cassoucous is additive-free and has a short shelf life. (By the way, the expiration date for this writer was 9 days after the date of purchase.)
