Sauce katsudon is one of Fukui Prefecture's representative gourmet specialties. Among them, "Ganso Sauce Katsudon" is served at "Europiken," the main branch of which is located in Fukui City.

As anyone who has had sauced pork cutlet bowl knows, it is quite different from ordinary pork cutlet bowl. Fukui's sauced pork cutlet is thinly sliced, coated with fine breadcrumbs, deep-fried, and dipped in a light, salty, spicy sauce. It is more like a French "cutlet" than a Japanese "cutlet.

The Sauce Katsu-don of Europa-Ken was created by the founder, who studied in Germany for his culinary research. Sliced prime loin and thigh meat is coated with fine special breadcrumbs and deep-fried in a lard head. Then, they are marinated in a secret sauce made from Worcestershire sauce and a blend of spices, and served over hot rice to complete the dish.

This is surprisingly delicious! First of all, the first bite has a nice crunchy texture. The batter is extremely fine and thin, so the texture is light and not oily at all.

The meat inside is soft and crispy. The more you bite into it, the more the meat's umami and sweetness overflows, which is further enhanced by the sour and tangy sauce. The meat is very easy to eat because there is no fatty part. I think even women can easily eat it.

Personally, I was very pleased with the sauce. It has a refreshing taste somewhat similar to soy sauce and suits the Japanese palate. The light and refreshing taste of the sauce, combined with the acidity of the sauce, makes the dish not feel heavy at all, even though it is deep-fried, and you can eat as many pieces as you like. If you visit Fukui, you must try it, but be careful not to eat too much!
