South Shan State of Myanmar is a mountainous region where "poppy", which is a raw material for opium, is cultivated in the border area between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. In recent years, the area of poppy cultivation has decreased due to the response of the Myanmar government, but many farmers are in distress due to poor income other than poppy, and some farmers continue to grow poppies in the mountains that the government cannot see. ..

The Myanmar government and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime are working together to resolve these issues. Since the region has climatic conditions that match the production of high-quality coffee at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,800 m, we are promoting the conversion of poppy to arabica coffee.


Meanwhile, MUJI bought and utilized small coffee beans that had been repelled by size even though the taste did not change at a reasonable price, "Myanmar coffee beans." Coffee beans are cultivated in South Shan State at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,800 m and harvested by hand. It is deep roasted and finished with richness and acidity.
