Enkaten mooncakes

Mooncake Specialty Store "Engaten

Enka Ten" is a mooncake specialty store located on the food floor of Isetan Shinjuku department store in Shinjuku, Tokyo. It is an affiliate brand of Shinjuku Nakamuraya, which is famous for its Japanese and Western confections and Chinese buns, and has only two stores, one in Shinjuku and one in Urawa, Saitama (as of November 2016).

Mooncakes are generally about the size of the palm of your hand. Enka Tian's mooncakes, on the other hand, are miniature and cute. They are the perfect size for those times when you just want something a little sweet.

Unusual mini size

Mooncakes are delicious, but sometimes a whole mooncake is a bit heavy. So personally, I'm glad they're smaller!

The store's showcase always has more than 10 kinds of mooncakes on display, including the standard azuki bean and walnut red bean paste, as well as seasonal items. For this visit, I purchased a box of 5 mooncakes as shown below. *All prices are tax-excluded, 200 yen for the box separately.

Enka-ten

The most standard mooncake with red bean filling, bearing the store's name. In addition to the product name "Enkaotian," the top surface is decorated with messages such as "Thank you" and "Congratulations. 250 yen.

You can choose from patterns such as "Thanks" and "Congratulations!"

Inside the thin, fragrant, baked crust is a rich, smooth, moist Koshi-an (sweet red bean paste). It moves smoothly and elegantly in the mouth, spreading a mild and rich sweetness. It is not too sweet, and the flavor of the azuki beans can be felt.

Cafe Strawberry Milk / Cafe Caramel Macchiato

Unconventional for a mooncake, the Strawberry Milk flavor is a combination of white bean paste, strawberries, and condensed milk. The pink skin and Western-style pattern make it look like a Western-style confectionery. 300 yen each.

The red bean paste has a rich flavor of sweet and sour strawberries. The juicy flavor is enhanced by a hint of condensed milk.

The red bean paste is full of strawberry flavor.

On the other hand, the unusual Caramel Macchiato flavor is expressed by adding caramel and coffee to the white bean paste. The savory sweetness of the caramel melts smoothly and freshly! It is a rich flavor.

Nut red bean paste

Twelve kinds of nuts and fruits such as walnuts, peanuts, wax gourd in honey, apricots, etc. are tightly packed. You can enjoy a variety of textures. The more you chew, the more the richness of the nuts and the sweetness of the fruit overflows, giving it a gorgeous flavor that is naturally sweet and satisfying. 250 yen.

Naito Togarashi

This is a slightly different seasonal item. It is a mooncake with white bean jam and chili pepper kneaded into it. The red bean paste melts sweetly and the spiciness spreads. The spiciness is intensified by the aftertaste of the chili pepper, so be careful if you are not a fan of chili pepper! 250 yen.

With its cute miniature size and beautiful pattern on the top, Enka-ten is sure to be a welcome souvenir. They can also be ordered in the store in original patterns, so they will come in handy as gifts for special occasions or for your loved ones!
