Now that they are in season, "fava beans" are easily available at supermarkets and grocery stores. Boiled and served with salt is the standard, but they are also delicious fried. Here is a simple recipe.
Fried Fava Beans
Ingredients (for 2 servings)5 pods fava beans
katakuriko (potato starch), a little at a time
1 tablespoon oil
salt and pepper to taste
DirectionsTake out the beans from the pod and peel the thin skin.
Place in a bowl or bat or other container in batches and sprinkle with katakuriko (potato starch). Shake the container gently to coat the surface evenly with the flour.
Heat oil in a frying pan and add the fava beans. Fry until lightly browned on both sides.
Absorb excess oil with kitchen paper and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
How does it taste? The surface is crispy and fragrant, while the inside is soft and flaky! The unique flavor and umami of the fava beans spreads gradually.
The key point is that baking hardens the outside of the beans, making them chewy. It is a change from just boiling them, and you will never get tired of the taste. Perfect as a snack!
This dish can easily be made with ingredients you have at home, as long as you have fava beans. Try it while they are in season!
