Have you ever heard of "Fried Oreos," a popular street food in the United States? It is a sweet treat made by dipping the well-known "Oreo", which is a chocolate cookie sandwich with sweet cream, in koromo (sweet potato) and deep frying it in oil.

If you search for the hashtag #friedoreos on Instagram, you will find many images of authentic fried Oreos. There are many people who have become addicted to fried Oreos after accidentally eating them even though they had decided not to eat them, and there are many people who like them so much that they have made a big pile of them.

Fried Oreos are still not very common in Japan, but we got a tip that they are served at Coast 2 Coast, a cafe in the Omotesando area of Harajuku, Tokyo. When I went to try it... I was completely captivated by its deliciousness, like a doughnut with melted chocolate wrapped in fluffy dough. ...what's with all the calories!

As a sports bar that mainly focuses on basketball, the designs on the walls and the miscellaneous goods sold in the store are all related to basketball. There is even a wall art of Hanamichi Sakuragi, drawn by the author of the popular manga "Slam Dunk", Takehiko Inoue (a must-see for fans).

I immediately ordered the "Fried Oreo" (600 yen, tax included, same below), which I was looking for. After ordering, the staff prepares the Oreo, starting with dipping the Oreo in the koromo.

After a few minutes of waiting, the fried Oreos arrived freshly fried and hot. Four pieces of fried Oreos are served with vanilla ice cream and topped with powdered sugar and crumbles with oats and dried berries.

The three-way shot of deliciousness was set.

One bite and you will be amazed at how soft and fluffy it is! It is more like bread dough than a roll of dough. When you gently bite into it, the dough sinks down softly, and the Oreo appears crispy underneath.

The more you bite into the dough, the chewier the Oreo becomes. The Oreo inside crumbles when you bite into it and melts smoothly under the heat of your tongue. The bittersweetness that is released at this point matches the buttery flavor of the koromo, making for the most delicious snack ever!

The warm fried Oreos are also excellent when served with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. The ice cream also helps to wash away any greasiness in the mouth, and everything tastes great right up until the last bite.

I was expecting them to be more oily and gritty, but they weren't at all (maybe it was the freshly fried flavor). Before I ate them, I thought "I'm going to get heartburn just thinking about eating sweet Oreos in tempura," but then I realized that I could eat all four of them. They are probably (or maybe I should say definitely) high in calories, but even with that, I can say that the taste is more than enough to satisfy my craving. The feeling of immorality that you are eating junk is also a taste of honey, isn't it?

The secret of the deliciousness is the "koromo

When we asked the manager how to make it, he told us that the secret of the delicious taste is in the "koromo. The dough is made from flour, eggs, and sugar, similar to that used for pancakes and doughnuts, and is then deep-fried in a slightly thicker layer than Oreos. The fluffy texture is the result of this dough.

Another key point is to freeze the Oreos before frying. This way, the cream inside does not melt when deep-fried. Perhaps this step is the reason why the Oreos are so crispy and yet smooth in the mouth.

There are already many recipes for fried Oreos on the Internet, but if you would like to try a "professional" recipe for fried Oreos, please take a look at it.
