According to a video released by Beck's NZ, Mat Tizard of Shine, who was responsible for the development of the beer bottle, has long thought that every time he grabbed a beer bottle, it resembled the cylinder of a phonograph invented by Thomas Edison. It just so happened that Edison invented the phonograph at the same time that Beck's NZ was brewing its first beer. This was the motivation behind the development of Edison beer.
They faced many technical difficulties when processing beer bottles into phonograph cylinders. To begin with, the technology for cutting music into cylinders itself was almost lost. For this reason, they began by reverse engineering from cylinders from Edison's time to restore the technology. Another major obstacle was the fact that beer bottles are too hard as a material compared to common record materials.
The completed Edison Bottle was unveiled at a design conference held in New Zealand in May. When music played from the Edison bottle, the audience gave a standing ovation.
The song recorded on the beer bottle is " Here She Comes" by the New Zealand band Ghost Wave. You can hear a portion of the song in the video released by the company.
