LAWSON STORE100 "Yokan (Japanese sweet bean jelly)
Yokan is a type of yokan sold at LAWSON STORE100 for 108 yen (tax included). Although a bit minor, I was intrigued to compare the matcha, ogura, and chestnut yokans. Each of them is a large size (150 grams), and each has a different flavor intensity. The products I purchased this time were "Matcha Yokan" from Yamazaki Baking Company and "Thick-sliced Yokan Ogura" and "Thick-sliced Yokan Chestnut" from Sugimotoya Confectionery.
Yamazaki Baking (Yamazaki) "Matcha Yokan
Matcha Yokan has 452 calories per serving, and as you eat it, the flavor gradually becomes more like green tea than matcha. The bean paste is made of white beans, but the aroma of the beans is weak and the sweetness is strong.
Sugimotoya Confectionery "Thick sliced Yokan Ogura
Thick sliced Yokan Ogura has about 430 kcal per piece (287 kcal per 100g (3.53oz)). The bean paste is azuki red bean paste, but the aroma of the bean is not very strong. However, the azuki beans are still in grains in some places, and when you bite into it, you can feel the characteristics of the azuki beans.
Sugimotoya Confectionery "Thick-sliced Yokan Chestnut
Thick sliced Yokan Chestnut has about 426 kcal per piece (284 kcal per 100g (3.53oz)). It is azuki red bean paste with chestnuts, but the aroma of beans and chestnuts is weak. However, when you bite into a piece of chestnut, it has a pleasant crunchy texture that you can enjoy.
The flavors of the three types are less intense than those of the 58g (2.05oz) mini yokans sold at convenience stores. All of them are rather large for a casual snack at home, but they seem to be just right for carrying with you to replenish energy during mountain climbing or hiking.
