Boshi-ban, a specialty of Kochi Prefecture
Have you ever heard of "Boshi-ban", a specialty of Kochi Prefecture? As the name suggests, it is a simple sweet bread shaped like a hat with a brim.It is rarely seen in Tokyo, but I got "Komi Bakery's Boshi-ban" at a recent event. The price was 216 yen (tax included).
The diameter of the circle is about the same as the length of an iPhone 7. It is finished in a two-tone color combination of yellow and burnt brown. It really looks like a miniature hat.
The "brim" is moist with a good amount of flouriness. It has a unique texture that is both sponge cake-like and sweet. It disappears in your mouth, leaving behind a mild sweetness and the richness of butter.
The brown part is finished like a bread roll. It is fluffy, light and salty. Combined with the sweet dough around it, the sweet and salty tastes are in perfect balance. It has a simple, unobtrusive flavor that made me feel nostalgic even though it was the first time I had tasted it.
The "hat bread" has a unique appearance and simple taste. Even if you are not a resident of Kochi Prefecture, you must try it if you see it!
