Kawagoe is famous as a place to eat and walk around. Various products such as steamed buns, cream puffs, and sherbet are sold here, but the most eye-catching among them are the "sweet potato chips" in plastic cups.

The chips are sold at "Koedo Osatsuan" near "Toki no Kane" (bell of time). It is a little unusual in that it is open only on Saturdays and Sundays.

The author headed there around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. I had expected to see crowds everywhere I looked even though the summer vacation was over, but... the line was long and stretched all the way to the side of the road.


I was lost for a moment, but I had to cover this one, given its visual impact, and kept a straight face in the line under the strong September sun, which was hard to believe.

It took me about 15 minutes to buy the item, thanks to the staff's good workmanship. Of course, I purchased the "Osatsu Chip" (500 yen including tax). It comes with a choice of dipping sauces: salted butter sauce, cod roe mayo sauce, cheese sauce, wasabi mayo sauce, chili sauce, chocolate cream, black honey cream, osatsu cream, or purple osatsu cream. The author selected cheese sauce.



Big-sized chips packed in a perfect balance. The service that comes with a large plastic bag to take out or bring home is very helpful.


First, take a bite without dipping anything. The crispy chips crack open with a pleasant sound, and the sweetness of the sweet potato spreads softly as you bite into them. It is a simple taste.


The cheese sauce adds an extra touch of junkiness to the dish, making it even more delicious. A man passing by muttered, "This is good for snacks with sake," and he was right.


Even the author, who normally does not eat much sweet potato snacks, found himself mindlessly pouring them into his mouth. It would be so much fun to take them home and eat them while dipping them in various sauces.


Koedo Osatsuan's "Osatsu Chip" has a great impact. It is an indispensable item for those who enjoy eating and walking in Kawagoe.
