LAWSON "Mochi Puyo Amao Strawberry".
sticky and soft

Recently, there have been an increasing number of sweets in convenience stores and supermarkets that are made of a sticky dough and filled with some kind of cream. They are like cream puffs or manjuu (steamed buns). Sticky dough is very satisfying, and it is also good for a snack or as a breakfast substitute.

So this time, we compared "sweets with cream wrapped in sticky dough" sold at local convenience stores and supermarkets. We tested which one was the most cost-effective, based on the degree of stickiness and the richness of the cream... and the number one was that Famima product!

Mochi Sweets Lineup

The following six items were prepared.

7-ELEVEN "Mochi Punya" 100 yen (tax included, same as below)
FamilyMart "Chubby Custard Puffs" 138 yen
FamilyMart "Puni Hoppe (custard whip)" 100 yen
LAWSON "Mochi Puyo" 100 yen
Ministop "Mochi Tama - Milk Cream" 100 yen
Montale "Pochamaru" 129 yen (SRP)

Mochi sweets from supermarkets and convenience stores
Names are usually in hiragana.

In addition to the private brand products of the convenience store companies, we also included "Pochamaru" in our lineup, which we had been curious about since its recent release. Isn't the name cute?

What is the No. 1 in terms of stickiness?

We will now announce the number one dough stickiness. The winner this time is... LAWSON's "Mochipuyo"!

Lawson "Mochi Puyo
Small, but soft and chewy!

Anyway, the elasticity of the dough is amazing! I tried to break it by hand, but I couldn't tear it apart properly, and this Mochipuyo was the only one of the six that required the help of a knife. The thickness of the dough was also outstanding, with the thickest part being about 1 cm.

Milk cream inside.

When you bite into it, the dough stretches like a rice cake. When you bite into it, it's chewy! The inside is filled with milk cream made from Hokkaido milk, which is also delicious, but the dough seems to be the star rather than the cream.

As of January 2017, Lawson also sells "Mochipuyo Amao Strawberry".

The ranking after the second place is as follows.

Second place: 7-ELEVEN "Mochi Punya
No. 3: Famima "Punihoppe
No. 4: Ministop "Mochi Tama
No. 5: Montale "Pochamaru
No. 6: Famima "Chubby Custard Puffs

7-ELEVEN's Mochi Puyos were not as good as the No. 1 Mochi Puyos, but they were sticky enough that the dough stretched a little when I tried to bite off a piece.

Both Pochamaru and Mochi-punyashi custard puffs have cream puffs at the core of their identity, so they are chewy with a "sizzling" sensation in the mouth. The former has a savory taste like monaka, while the latter is a bit peculiar because the dough is cheese flavored. It is suitable for adults.

What is the No. 1 cream-filled level?

Next, we compared the creaminess of the six products, four of which contained milk cream and two of which contained custard cream. The two with custard are all Famima products.

The one with the most cream was... Famima 's "Puni Hoppe"!

Famima "Punihoppe".
It is massive and heavy.

The dough has a distinctive savory flavor and is filled with a custard whip that has a deliciously rich egg flavor! I felt the presence of the cream most strongly, partly because the dough is thin like a thin-skinned manjuu and light in the mouth.

Famima "Punihoppe".
There is a mark on the top where the cream was injected.

So much cream!

The second and subsequent places are as follows

No. 2: Ministop "Mochi Tama
No. 3: Montale "Pochamaru
No. 4: 7-ELEVEN "Mochi Punya
No. 5: LAWSON "Mochi Puyo
No. 6: Famima "Mochi-tteki Kastardo-shu" (chunky custard puffs)

The comparison is not based on weight, but only on "generosity relative to the dough.

To name a few of the creams that were distinctive, first of all, the Mochi Tama from Ministop was a slightly refreshing milk cream with a hint of sourness. And yet, it has vanilla seeds in it, so it smells really good.

Only one of the six products is oval-shaped

The black bumps are vanilla seeds.

The one with the strongest milkiness was Pochamaru. It had a gentle sweetness and richness that filled my mouth with the taste of milk the moment I ate it. The aftertaste is clean and refreshing with a faint aroma of Western liquor.

MONTAIR "POCHAMARU
Monterey's chubby marbles

MONTAIR "POCHAMARU
Large size cream puffs

MONTAIR "POCHAMARU
Plenty of melted cream

7-ELEVEN's Mochi Punya is the only one with a soft cottage cheese-like cream, while the other five products all have a thicker cream. It was not too sweet and had a refreshing taste.

What is the No. 1 cospa?

The ranking is based on the "cosmetics cost per unit," which is the ratio of the amount of dough and cream in the package to the amount of food. The top 3 are as follows!

No. 1 Famima "Punihoppe
No. 2 Ministop "Mochi Tama
No. 3 Montale "Pochamaru

The Puni Hoppe came in first place because it was 100 yen and had a great amount of cream, and the rich custard kept me full until the aftertaste. The dough was also thin but mochi mochi (sticky) and had a lingering texture.

FamilyMart "Puni Hoppe (Custard Whip)

Mochitama is a rather thin dough filled with elegantly sweet milk cream. Although small in size, the moist dough and the cream filling left me with the feeling that I had eaten a good portion.

Ministop "Mochi-tama
The texture and taste are elegant and delicious, and you will want to eat many pieces!

Pochamaru came in third place because it was large and filled with enough cream to drink.

MONTAIR "POCHAMARU
You will be full.

I hope the above helps you in your choice of sticky snacks!
