Ever heard of a "uiro bar?"
Ever heard of a "uiro bar?"

Uiro is one of Nagoya's famous confections. It is a traditional Japanese confectionery made by kneading rice flour and sugar and steaming it.

The most common type is a long, thin pole-shaped one, but the one I found looks like an ice cream lolly. It is called Osu Uiro "Uiro Bar.

Osu Uiro was established in 1949. It has been selling Uiro under the name of "Uiro. Its original product "Nairo," which is Uiro with Koshi An (sweetened red bean paste) added, is also popular.

Now, let's take a look at the Uiro bar. The kraft-colored box has a design that looks like an ice cream cone. There is a window right where the bar is placed, giving a glimpse of the contents.

When the box is opened, there are five bars in a row, each with a 5cm long stick inserted into the hollow. The flavors are "Sakura," "Kuro," "Shiro," "Nairo," and "Macha.

They are individually wrapped in bite-size pieces, making them easy to use as souvenirs. You can go ahead and eat them all by yourself, or share them with several people. You don't have to cut them with a knife, and the ease of opening them and eating them straight off the stick is nice.

Wow, so cute!

I also found another one, "Nama Uiro Truffle" sold by Osu Uiro. This time I bought the "cocoa" one (they also have matcha).

The package looks like a Western-style confectionery.

When I took out the inner box from the long and narrow box that looks like it contains chocolate truffles, I found five round dumplings like truffles.

They are said to be handmade coffee uiro with a layer of cocoa powder made in France.

The cocoa powder is so light and smooth on the tongue. The coffee Uiro is so sweet that you can feel the concentrated bitterness from the cocoa powder. The texture of the Uiro is very soft. It is nice to have a smooth texture like chocolate that melts in your mouth, but I also like the sticky texture of Uiro.

The bite-size portions make it easy to eat.

How do you like the stylishly evolved Uiro? They are very photogenic (and delicious). They can be used as Nagoya souvenirs, simple gifts, and of course, for yourself. If you see them at a souvenir shop, please try one.
