The other day, on November 25th, the "Savory Tart" specialty store "What a Tart!" Opened in Omotesando, Tokyo. A savory tart is an unsweetened tart for meals. The unsweetened "savory pie" is also offered at "Pie Face, " a pie specialty store from Australia that landed in Japan in October.

Like pies, sweet tarts are the mainstream in Japan. I was curious about the unfamiliar savory tart, so I actually tried it at the store.

■ What kind of store is What a Tart !?

The shop is about a 5-minute walk from Omotesando Station. Walk along Aoyama-dori towards Shibuya, turn the corner of "MUJI Found MUJI" and continue for several tens of meters. What a Tart! Is on the first floor of the 4th building on the left, "Classica Omotesando".

The storefront is full of vegetation, and the atmosphere is like standing in a deep forest combined with the green outer wall. Warm orange light is spilling from the store.

Passing through the door, you will be greeted by a showcase lined with colorful savory tarts.

There are 12 products in the lineup. However, around 16:00 on weekdays when I entered the store, two of them were sold out. If you want to choose from as many as you can, maybe you should go early.

Originally it is a space where the bar is open at night, so the interior has a calm atmosphere. The walls are decorated with framed chic posters. There is a wide variety of seats, including counter seats, high table seats, and table seats for four, so it seems to be able to accommodate a variety of situations.

■ Eat 3 savory tarts!

The three savory tarts selected this time are "paella", "pork rose confit & rosemary potato", and "garlic broccoli". Check out first at the cashier next to the showcase and take a self-service seat. The tart can also be warmed with the toaster inside the store.

In addition to the tart separately, it is also sold as a set of one tart and coffee (starting from 700 yen), or as a set of one tart and salad and coffee (starting from 1,000 yen). Only the tart can be taken home.

◆ Paella 550 yen

Choose by being attracted to the gorgeous fillings (ingredients) such as shrimp and mussels. The filling base is not rice, but "quinoa" (a type of millet). It is said that it is cooked with boiled clam soup.

The crispy dough and the bubble wrap of quinoa appear alternately, giving it a pleasant texture. The flavor of saffron and the taste of clams overflow from quinoa, and if you chew with seafood topping, it is a full-fledged taste of paella itself.

◆ Garlic broccoli 450 yen

A rectangular tart with a lot of broccoli. You can also see sliced garlic and lemon. The filling base is chickpea paste.

Moist and creamy hummus matches the crispy dough. The moderately firm broccoli spreads the garlic flavor with each bite. Accented with the spicy taste of the occasional chili pepper.

The bite with lemon is sour and refreshing. The bitterness gradually exudes from the peel, and you can enjoy an adult aftertaste.

◆ Pork rose confit & rosemary potato 550 yen

It is a tall dish with a large pork confit and potatoes. The filling base is lentils.

Compared to the other two products, the dough with a crispy texture uses whole grain flour. The contrast between the trolley and the soft pork confit is vivid, and the aroma of the dough and the taste of the meat spread with each bite.

Lentil grains remain in places on the filling base, creating a chewy texture with potatoes. It is a satisfying dish.

The savory tarts of What a Tart !, all of which have a full-fledged filling taste and are small but highly satisfying. The recipe of the dough is different according to the filling, so please enjoy each matching taste. It is both delicious and beautiful, so you will surely be pleased with it as a souvenir.
