Teshima is a small island that can be lapped by bicycle, but with the Setouchi Triennale being held, many tourists are visiting not only from Japan but also from overseas. Like Shodoshima, it is an olive-producing region, and it is said that fruits such as lemons, mandarins, and strawberries are also cultivated.
Even in such Toyoshima, we discover one after another "island gourmet" that can only be eaten here! So, I will introduce it along with the scenery of the trip.
◆ There is a “meeting place” on the island! "Shima Kitchen" using local ingredients
"Shima Kitchen" is a vacant house converted into a restaurant. Here, a menu with plenty of locally caught fish and vegetables is offered.
By the way, Shima Kitchen holds a birthday party for the people of the island every month. It's a very cozy shop!
This time I ordered the "Shima Kitchen Set" (1,543 yen). Like a full-course meal, the dishes are brought in one after another, including appetizers, salads, and main courses.
Today's main dish is "sea bream fried" which is in season now. It is served with colorful vegetables such as zucchini, pumpkin and carrots.
The fried sea bream wrapped in crispy batter is thick and plump! The more you chew, the more juicy the flavor will overflow. The sweetness of the mellow tartar sauce and the moderate acidity add an accent to the taste of the light sea bream.
Also order additional desserts! It is a "lemon pound cake" using lemons from Toyoshima. Even before eating, the scent of fresh lemon is fluffy.
Thickly cut and solid pound cake topped with cream and "Prunus tomentosa" compote. The powdered sugar that I sprinkled at the end looks like powdered snow, and it's kind of cool.
The cake dough is moist and tightly clogged, and it's perfect for eating! A bittersweet lemon peel adds an accent to the refreshing acidity and subtle sweetness of lemon.
Eating while feeling the scent of the wind coming out of the screen door reminded me of the summer vacation I spent at my grandma's house in the country when I was a kid. Such sepia and nostalgic memories may double the deliciousness.
◆ Summer Japanese sweets! Daifuku Kakigori from "Strawberry House"
"Ichigoya", a sweets shop run by a strawberry farmer. Here, you can buy crepes, parfaits, and shaved ice made from strawberries grown on your own farm.
The writer who is completely sick of the cheerfulness of early summer that shines in the air. From various types of Kakigori menu, we have selected "Ichigo Daifuku Ice", which seems to be able to replenish sugar well. Shiratama and azuki beans are contained in shaved ice.
The generously sprinkled strawberry sauce is very juicy, and the sweetness of the rich ripe strawberry without any unpleasant taste! The ice is fluffy and soft and melts when you put it in your mouth. If you eat it with Tsuyudaku's strawberry sauce, it will have a more "fluffy" texture!
After eating for a while, white balls and red beans came out from inside! The inside of Shiratama is slightly frozen, and the crispy and chewy texture is fresh. If you bring the sweet azuki beans and ice strawberries together to your mouth ... oh! Certainly this is "Ichigo Daifuku"! It's a chilly strawberry daifuku !!
Of the M, L, and big sizes available, the one I ate this time was the big size (670 yen). It's quite a volume, but the ice is fluffy so you can eat it easily.
In addition, "strawberry jam" and "strawberry sauce" are also sold at stores for souvenirs. If you get this, you may be able to eat delicious ice strawberries even after you go home ...!?
◆ It's like on a ship! "Umitota Restaurant"
"Umitota Restaurant" is located right next to the coast and you can feel like a restaurant on board. At high tide, the waves come close to you, so you can see the scenery as if you were really on a ship.
Wouldn't it be nice to make a reservation at dusk and have an aperitif while watching the sunset? It's nice to enjoy the moist atmosphere alone, but this is a place you definitely want to visit with friends and lovers who can share beautiful scenery.
◆ Bonus. "Sanuki udon" in Takamatsu
By the way, I have traveled from Shodoshima to Toyoshima and the remote islands of Kagawa prefecture, but in fact I haven't eaten a bite of the famous "Sanuki udon" yet. ... what a hell! I can't go home like this! So, just before heading to Takamatsu Airport, I decided to go to eat udon in a hurry!
I came to the long-established udon restaurant "Sanuki Mengyo" in Takamatsu City. In addition to a wide variety of udon menus, the side menu "oden" that you want to eat with udon is also substantial.
What should I hide? The author of Sanuki Udon, the first in my life. I ordered "Chilled Bukkake Udon" (350 yen) and "Chilled Kamatama Udon" (430 yen).
The noodles are thick and chewy! It is chewy and has a chewy texture that is close to "Bali" in ramen (cold udon noodles are more chewy). Smooth and smooth mouthfeel, refreshing throat, firm chewy ... Why didn't you ever eat such delicious udon noodles ...!
