So I decided to go there.


■ What kind of country is Jamaica?

Jamaica is an island country located in Central and South America. The country is 11,424 square kilometers, which is about the same size as Akita Prefecture (Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs).


And after all Jamaica is reggae. It's a country with a cheerful and easy-going image, but what exactly is Jamaican food?

■ Jamaican restaurant "AALAWI"

■ First, order at the counter

AALAWI is a prepaid system where you order and pay at the counter before you get to your seat.

The main menu at lunch time is the lunch plate. I ordered "Mix" from 3 types of "Chicken" or "Pork" and "Mix" containing both. I want to eat chicken and pork!

After paying, take a seat. There are tables and counters in the seats, and one writer took the counter seats.


Suddenly, next to the counter, there are autographed flyers and photos of Jamaican singers. A must-see for reggae fans!

■ Jamaican plate arrives

Shortly after, the lunch plate "Mix" was delivered. The squeaking noise when the plate is placed on the table suggests that it is quite voluminous.


On the plate are rice, grilled chicken and pork, tomato and cabbage coleslaw salad, potato chips, and a refreshing orange.

The owner said, "Please sprinkle with chili sauce and ketchup," so the author, who loves spicy foods, decided to sprinkle with chili sauce.


The pork is smoky and chewy. The more you chew, the more umami and moderate fat ooze out, and your face unintentionally flutters.

Chicken has bones, so use a spoon and fork to loosen and eat. Of course, you can grab it by hand. The fragrant chicken is delicate, tender and very juicy.

Rice is longer and thinner than domestic rice, and may be Jamaican rice. This rice with reddish-brown beans seems to be eaten as a staple food even in Jamaica. The amount was about two bowls, but it was light and crispy, so when I noticed it, it was flattened.

By the way, I recommend mixing rice and meat with chili sauce and ketchup.


The thinly fried potatoes on the side dish have a crispy, crispy and light texture. It has a strong potato taste and gently neutralizes the hot mouth with chili sauce.
