Starbucks iced beverage served without a lid

Starbucks Coffee Japan will expand its initiative to serve in-store iced beverages without lids to further reduce waste from its stores nationwide starting June 13.

Starbucks Iced Beverage without Lid

The initiative to serve in-store iced beverages without lids was first introduced at a total of 113 stores in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka, and other cities. At a store in Yokohama, about half of the in-store customers chose the lid-less option, which was well received by many people.

By expanding the program to approximately 1,700 stores nationwide, Starbucks expects to reduce plastic by approximately 100 tons per year (projected figure based on data obtained during the period from April 18 to May 22, 2022, when the program was first introduced at 113 stores). Starbucks will further accelerate its progress in reducing single-use materials by offering a variety of options, such as encouraging customers to provide their own mugs and glasses in the stores and promoting the use of "My Tumbler" in order to achieve its global and Japanese goal of a 50% reduction in waste by 2030.

Introduction of FSC-certified paper straws

Starting in January 2020, FSC(R)-certified paper straws will be introduced in stages and are currently offered at all stores in Japan. We expect to reduce straws by 200 million per year.
