LAWSON STORE100 has overturned the conventional wisdom that "bento should contain a variety of colorful side dishes," and is now selling "just bento" lunchboxes, which contain only one type of side dish, for 216 yen each, to meet the needs of people who want to enjoy only their favorite foods. The first "Sausage Bento" sold 830,000 servings in June last year, and the second "Meatball Bento" sold 320,000 servings, making it a popular series.

The third product in the series is the Nori Isobe-Age Bento, which contains only fried chikuwa. The reason why we chose chikuwa no isobe-age was because it is a standard side dish that is always included in Nori-ben, but it does not play a leading role, and we thought there is a latent need for people to eat more of it. The nori-ben consists of rice topped with soy-sauce seasoned bonito flakes and nori seaweed, and three slices of fried chikuwa isobe-age on top.

The star of the dish, the fried chikuwa, is made from grilled chikuwa produced by a fish paste manufacturer in Ishikawa Prefecture, in pursuit of the best taste of the chikuwa itself. Each piece is battered and deep fried by hand. The amount of aonori (green laver) is also carefully considered to achieve the best balance for the aroma of the sea.

There is also an ingenious way to alleviate the stress of not being able to cut the nori with chopsticks. Instead of one large piece of seaweed, two smaller pieces are used.

Dashi soy sauce is served separately. This soy sauce is made by Kamata Soy Sauce in Kagawa, the home of Sanuki udon, and is also used for bukkake udon. You can add as much as you like to change the flavor and enjoy the dish until the end.
