Cafe & Meal MUJI Winter Menu

I tried the winter menu at Cafe & Meal MUJI, a cafe-restaurant attached to MUJI. There are four kinds of deli (side dishes) and one kind of sweets. You can enjoy new items that make the most of vegetables and fruits.

Cafe & Meal MUJI operates exclusively at larger MUJI stores, where you can enjoy deli-centered meals and cafe-style sweets. The menu varies slightly depending on the location, but this time I visited MUJI in the Seibu Department Store in Shibuya, Tokyo.

I ordered the "Choice of 4 deli items" set meal (1,000 yen, tax included, same as below) and the "Gateau Chocolat and Berry Parfait" (800 yen).

You can choose four items you want while looking at the piles of deli items lined up on the table. I decided to try the "Apple Salad with Cottage Cheese," "Winter Vegetables with Walnut Miso," "Spinach and Beetroot Salad," and "Broccoli and Winter Onion with Oyster Tapenade Sauce," all using seasonal ingredients.

I got the impression that there are many vegetable dishes on the menu. Cafe & Meal MUJI also offers a set meal with a hearty meat-based main dish, but I omitted it. All set meals come with rice and miso soup. In addition to white rice, you can also choose from a selection of 10-grain rice.

The "Apple Salad with Cottage Cheese" is a salad of mismatched apples harvested in Aomori Prefecture, mixed with honey, bacon, mustard dressing and cottage cheese.

The apples are sweet and fragrant, with a fruit-like flavor, and are cut into large pieces. The dressing is a subtle complement to the refreshing flavor of the cottage cheese, giving the dish the appearance of a complete dessert.

It is not suitable as a side dish for rice, but the apple flavor is very good, and it is one of the most recommended winter deli dishes.

Winter Vegetables with Walnut Miso" is a dish of seasonal winter vegetables such as yam, lotus root, and taro dressed with sweet walnut miso and topped with deep-fried burdock root.

Sweet scent like shiso

Both the yam and taro are firm enough to be easily chewed while retaining a good degree of chewiness. The yam is less sticky. The walnut miso has a sweet aroma like shiso (Perilla frutescens). It is a perfect side dish for rice.

Spinach and Beetroot Salad" combines sweet spinach and kale with beets, beans and millet, and is served with a red wine vinegar-based dressing.

The combination of bright red and green ingredients is beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The acidity of this dish will refresh your palate.

Broccoli and winter onion with oysters in tapenade sauce" is made with oysters in a sauce made with black olives and boiled vegetables.

Rich and full-bodied, reminiscent of "ajillo".

The broccoli is exquisitely soft and tender while retaining its bright green color, and the crunchy texture of the winter onion adds a nice accent. The shellfish is rich in flavor and has a rich taste, as if the vegetables were dressed with "ajillo" oil. This dish is also perfect as a side dish for rice.

Gâteau Chocolat and Berry Parfait

The "Gateau Chocolat and Berry Parfait" is a fancy sweet with multiple layers of chocolate and berry sauce in a glass, nuts and cut gateau chocolat on top, soft-serve ice cream squeezed over the top, and finally a thin biscuit-like pastry inserted at the end.

This is the kind of thing that sticks.

It is a bit pricey, but it is wonderfully satisfying, and each time you dig in with a spoon, you can taste a different chocolate aroma and sweetness. The nuts and cakes also have different textures, and when mixed with the cool soft-serve ice cream, you will never get tired of it.

However, the volume is quite large, so it is more suitable for teatime than for an after-dinner dessert.

Cafe & Meal MUJI also continues to offer the usual deli items and sweets. The line to enter the store is a bit long, but you should definitely give it a try this winter.
