Kamishika Monogatari

Cute sweets with a Nara flavor. We found "Kamishika Monogatari" with a deer motif at the "Nara Mahoroba-kan" antenna store in Tokyo.

Deer are beloved in Nara as messengers of the gods. It is said that there is a painting in the treasure hall of Kasuga-taisha Shrine depicting the god Kashima riding a white deer with a persimmon branch as a whip, and that the deer in Nara have been respected as "shinroku" (divine deer).

The "Shinroku Monogatari" was born from such a myth in Yamato. The white paper package depicts a deer sparkling in gold. 3 pieces are priced at 540 yen (tax included).

The monaka is sandwiched between caramelized almonds, green bean paste, and persimmon. Yoshino persimmons from Nara Prefecture, domestic condensed milk, and domestic glutinous rice are used. The pure white dough in the shape of a deer is moist and pleasant to the palate. As it absorbs moisture in the mouth, it softly melts.

The smooth bean paste spreads a deep richness. The milky flavor of condensed milk and butter is matched by the mellow sweetness of the persimmon, whose presence is felt through the crispy texture. The almonds add a subtle accent and boost the savory flavor of the dough. It has a deep flavor that would go well with both Japanese tea and black tea.
