Toraya "Kokata Yokan Strawberry
I bought some of Toraya's "Kokata Yokan Ichigo". It tastes like a thick strawberry jam made into yokan, and strawberry lovers are sure to be satisfied. It is a seasonal product of Toraya, and the package is cute and spring-like. The price is 260 yen per stick (tax included). The size may look bite-sized, but it is very satisfying to eat. You can cut it into small pieces with a knife and enjoy it.
The most distinctive feature of this yokan is the strong fruit aroma that tickles your nose to the point of choking on a single spoonful. It is like a high-grade jam that has been further boiled and hardened, but with a fresh fruit flavor. It reminded me more of a Western confectionery than a Japanese confectionery, a jelly with little water.
It is supposed to be made with red bean paste, but it seems to have very little of the so-called okura-yokan flavor. Contrary to its calm, glossy black appearance, what I felt on my tongue was a gorgeous and unique product.
If you are looking for something to drink, not only Japanese tea but also wine or brandy may be a good choice.
