Found a canned "Mackerel Curry" at KALDI Coffee Farm. The price was 259 yen (tax included).
Canned mackerel and curry are not uncommon in this day and age, but mackerel curry is a bit unusual. And the illustration on the can of an Indian-looking man holding a mackerel.... I was curious about many things, so I tried it.
I tried Saba Curry.
Ingredients include vegetables, mackerel, and curry powder. The manufacturer, Nobuta Canning, is a major seafood cannery in Choshi, Japan.Transferred to a separate dish and heated in a microwave oven, it is served with rice prepared separately. At this point, you can see that it is filled with large pieces of mackerel.
Now it's time to try it. The curry is moderately spicy and rich and thick. It is a typical Japanese curry and goes well with white rice. The whole dish has a slight mackerel flavor. In any case, it does not taste Indian.
There are four large pieces of mackerel in the dish, which is quite a large portion. It is tailored to be easy to eat without bones.
It is hard to tell because it is covered with curry, but it seems that the mackerel is battered and deep-fried. Therefore, when you bite into it, it softens and loosens, and the flavor and deliciousness enclosed inside spreads out. This is delicious!
I found out that this mackerel curry once appeared in a TV drama and was later commercialized as an actual product. At the time, it was so popular that it was temporarily difficult to obtain.
In any case, it is a rare and delicious mackerel curry. If you see it, give it a try!
